The Pie Lady & Son
Deborah & Wil Tyler
Nyack, NY
In the late 1990's, Deborah Tyler was the best kept secret. She baked unbelievable pies and her friends raved. "Sell them," they said. So she converted her home into a Health Dept approved kitchen, posted a simple "Pie" sign in her front yard and opened her back door to customers. And people came. There was a steady stream of people. It was best if you pre-ordered because if you just stopped by you took your chances that she wasn't sold out. At the time, she was the mother of three young children, she was covered in flour morning and night, but always wore an apron and pearls… always. Keeping up with the demand for her pies was so great, that she became exhausted.
So she gave it up and moved away to Cooperstown.
But then SHE CAME BACK! In 2009, Deborah came back to the pie business, this time with an official shop and a new partner, her son Will, and a staff of bakers. Together, they have a solid business, selling from their shop, special orders and at a hand full of farmers' markets. They use local fruits when in season….. But it's all about her crust.
