300 Years and Still Growing!
Before the American Revolutionary War, before George Washington was born, before the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were conceived, in 1712 the Concklin family purchased 400 acres of land in Pomona and planted an orchard.
Three hundred years and eleven generations later, siblings Richard Concklin and Linda Concklin Hill and their families continue the tradition of harvesting apples from their land.
But the cornucopia of fruit that they grow does not end with the 20 varieties of apples. Beginning in the spring, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, currents, gooseberries, and cherries are harvested, then mid-summer peaches, plums, nectarines, corn and tomatoes which is followed by two months of apple and pumpkin picking in the fall. Their farm never stops; apple cider, award-winning apple cider donuts, pies, cookies and cakes are in production all year long.
As family farms and farmland disappear across the country, the Orchards of Concklin is one of a handful of farms left in Rockland County. (In fact, they are reputed to be the 8th oldest family business in the nation.) To keep their farm afloat, the Concklins work non-stop operating a farm store, a garden nursery and participate in over twenty farmers’ markets in the tri-state area, which enables them to sell direct to the customer. Year by year, decade by decade, every season presents new obstacles; the biggest being drastic weather conditions; draught, early freezes, hurricanes or torrential rainstorms.
At our winter market, you will find a variety of their crispy, crunchy apples. Visit their farm store in Pomona. Each season brings a new fruit for you. They have a green house filled with annuals and perennials, berries and peaches in the summer, and then you can bring the family to their Pick-your-own-Apples in September and the beginning of October and Pumpkins in October. At this time, they have additional fun for the kids, with all kinds of bouncy rides. It all makes for a great day!
